Remember to renew your Registration

How To Renew Your Registration

When you buy a car you have to ask the seller if the car has current registration or check online for the Expiry. When you purchase a car it is not mandatory for the seller to sell the car with a current Registration therefore as the new owner you have to check and be sure that your vehicle has up-to-date registration. After the ownership change process, you are the new owner and if the vehicle does not have registration and you get pulled over by police YOU will take the hit and get a ticket.

However, some vehicles are free from the continuous renewal of registration such as tractors.

Putting Your Registration on Hold

Let's go under the assumption that you for any reason won't drive the vehicle for a while and do not want to pay for registration when you are not driving the car. You can put you registration on an exemption. You or Someone else can do it on behalf of you. An Exemption is basically when you put your vehicle registration on hold.

Keep In mind that when you decide to drive the vehicle and are ready to start using the car, you need to do a renewal of registration. Your vehicle has to be at least be on exemption 3 months before you can do a renewal.

All you need to put your vehicle on the exemption is your New Zealand driver's license, Licence plate, and Credit card.
